General Facts

The total area of the country is about 244, 000 sq km.

Its population – about 60 million people

Political organization – a constitutional monarchy without a written constitution

England and Wales were united administratively, politically, and legally by 1543. The crowns of England and Scotland were united in 1603, but the two countries remained separate political entities until the 1707 Act of Union, which formed the Kingdom of Great Britain with a single legislature. From 1801, when Great Britain and Ireland were united, until the formal establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, the kingdom was officially designated the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles – a group of isles lying off the north-west coast of Europe. The country is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover in the South, and the North Sea in the east. To the west of the United Kingdom is the Atlantic Ocean.

As the coastline of the country is indented, there are a lot of bays there and channels. But for the ones mentioned earlier we can also name: the Bristol Channel and the Cardigan Bay. The Bristol Channel is a long area of water between southeast England and the southern coast of Wales. The Cardigan Bay is an inlet of St George's Channel in the Irish Sea, in western Wales.

On the east coast of England there's the Wash. The land around it is flat, low-lying and marshy.
