1. Write down, translate and practise pronunciation of the words from the story: important, Ireland, Dublin, suddenly, without, angry, perhaps, quickly, quietly, lucky, interesting, friendly, madam, excited, inside, frightened, soon, different, dangerous, closely, blind, difficult, behind, hundred, dark, knife, ghost. Try to look at the words above for some minutes and then cover them up. How many adjectives and adverbs can you remember? Put the letters in the following words in the right order: sgunadore, nuledysd, thogs, tritmatnorp, hpespar, twuhito, frenideft. 2. These regular verbs are used in the story. Put them into the Past Simple and arrange in three groups according to the rules of reading -ed. Which verbs change their spelling in the past? play, love, want, arrive, stay, cry, listen, wait, call, open, answer, stop, marry, start, visit, like, dance, live, laugh, talk, cook, clean, wash, follow, jump, move, happen, smile, close, try, kill, ask. Write the Past Simple of the following irregular verbs from the story and remember them: come, sing, feel, leave, sleep, hear, see, run, understand, speak, forget, meet, think, take, find, know, show, build, stand, have, hit, sit, say, tell, wake. 1.♫ Listen and read the story. Pay attention to the way proper names are pronounced: Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Tyrone, Mr. Carew, Fanny, Dublin, Lord Glenfallen, Cahergillagh, Martha. Prepare the following passages for good reading (listen to them again) and translation: p. 12 ‘Lord Glenfallen and I got married ... away from the door'. p. 17 ‘I thought about it all day … again that night'.
