KUMASH NURGALIEVICH NURGALIYEV - THE PEOPLE'S TEACHER
(1925-1988)

Kumash Nurgalievich Nurgaliyev was born on the 29-th of October in 1925 in the village Orlovka of the Markakol district in the Eastern Kazakhstan region.

In 1933 he entered the first grade of Chingistayskaya secondary school of Katon-Karagai district. He studied very well in all the subjects, but his father's sudden death prevented him from finishing school.

As the eldest son in the family, he had to help his mother to bring up his younger brothers. That is why, in 1940, after the 8th grade he began to earn his living: he worked as a storekeeper on the farm, a salesman in the shop, a secretary of the village council.

In the same year he was admitted to the ranks of the Komsomol. In 1942-1943 he was elected the secretary of the Komsomol organization of the collective farm, a member of the Markakol regional committee of Komsomol.

From May 1943 to May 1944 K. Nurgaliyev was serving in the army in the Far East. From May 1944 to October 29, 1944 he was involved in battles for the liberation of the Baltic from the German invaders.

On the 29-th of October, on his birthday, he was seriously wounded. His both legs and left arm were amputated. His strong will, remarkable vitality helped him to come through 12 heavy operations, he bore inhuman pangs and did not break down. In Moscow hospital, he took an external certificate of education and finished additional courses of accountants.

In August, 2, 1946, he was awarded “Order of the Red Banner" for his heroic action.

In 1946 he returned to his native village. And, in spite of his severe wound, he worked as a teacher, then as a headmaster in Sorvenskaya School. In 1947, with the villagers' help he started building his first school.

In 1948 he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and in the same year Nurgaliyev entered Pedagogical University named after Abai (Department of History) in Alma-Ata. In 1955 he graduated from it with honors. In 1957 he began working as a headmaster at the secondary school, and in the same year he succeeded in opening classes with instruction in the Kazakh language.

From 1957 to 1969 he organized building a boarding school. Children of the most remote farms and villages lived and studied there. In 1969 he succeeded in building the school in the village of Buran of Markakol district and 16 apartments for the teachers.

Since 1957, he was always elected a member of the Markakol District Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan. In 1963 he was awarded the badge "Outstanding Public Education of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic."
For important contribution to education, in 1966 he was awarded the order of the "Red Banner of Labour", in 1969 he was awarded the badge "Outstanding Public Education of the USSR."

In 1974 he was awarded the title "Honored Teacher of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic." In 1981 he was one of four teachers of the Kazakh SSR awarded "People's Teacher of the USSR."

Kumash Nurgalievich was elected a delegate to the last three Republican IV, V, and VI Congresses of teachers in Kazakhstan and two All-Union Congresses of teachers in 1968, 1978. He was repeatedly elected a delegate to the Eastern Kazakhstan Region Party conferences.

On the 27-th of May in 1988 the heart of this remarkable man, a great teacher, a soldier of the Great Patriotic War, a patriot, whose whole life was devoted to children stopped beating.

Nowadays one of the collages of Ust –Kamenogorsk is named after Kumash Nurgalievich Nurgaliyev.
