A servant of holy things,

A helper of mankind,

Bells ring. The King is dead:

Long live the King!

Deep peace of the running wave to you

Deep peace of the flowing air to you

Deep peace of the shining stars to you

Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.

Scene 3 - The castle. Merlin and the Lords.

Merlin: My Lords, here is the task I give to each of you - outside the town, behind the church yard, you'll find a large block of stone. There, thrust within a wedge of steel is a wonderful sword. Try to pull it out.

Lord 1: That is an easy thing to do.

Lord 2: Very easy, indeed.

Lord 3: I'll be king of Britain, strong as I am.

Lord 4: I wonder what will come of all this.

Scene 4 - The churchyard. The Lords, people of the town, children.

Boy: Have you seen how they all try hard?

Girl: No one succeeds. It is a miracle. What a wonderful sword ...

Boy: The jewels glisten in the sun. And the golden blade...

Girl: Look, something is written on it.

Boy: I will go and see.

Girl: Be careful, they might get angry with you.

Boy goes and reads:

"Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil is right wise king born of all England"

Girl: Does that mean that we will have no king until the right man comes?

Boy: Maybe we shall have to wait a long time.

Scene 5 - The market place - noises of a tournament in the background.

Lady 1:Look at those gallant knights! Hector, Kay and Arthur. Father and sons, an older and younger one, I'm sure.

Lady 2:And the younger one, how handsome he is.

Lady 3:They have come to attend the tournament, all three of them, I'm sure,

Hector(father), Kay and Arthur are speaking

Hector:Kay, will you fight at the tournament? Arthur is still too young, but one day he'll be a noble Knight too!

Kay: And I shall indeed ... but, oh father, where is my sword? Have I lost it or did I leave it at home?

Hector:I don't know, son. When did you see it last?

Arthur: I'll ride back, Kay, and try to find it. Ride on, father, I'll meet you at the tournament!

Scene 6 - The churchyard, Arthur alone.

Arthur: What is this glistering in the sun? How beautiful... A sword?! And I haven't found Kay's sword yet. What if I take this one and he can fight with it...

Arthur pulls out the sword.

Scene 7 - The tournament

Arthur: Kay, Sir Kay, here is a most beautiful sword for you!

K: This doesn't belong to me. Where did you get it from?
Arthur: I found it behind the church, in a block of stone.

1: He pulled it out!

2. That's the holy sword.

3. The boy has got the sword - It's a miracle!

4. Did Merlin help him? Did he work a magic?

Arthur:No one helped me. I pulled it out myself. I was all alone!

Merlin:What are you so excited about? - Son, where did you get that sword?

Arthur:Outside the town, I found it...

Merlin:Come on, boy, show me the place!

They all go to the place where Arthur found the sword.

Arthur: There you are! And it was thrust in like that!

He puts it back into the steel.

1. Like that - What? I can't pull it out?! You try !

2. I can't move it either.

Arthur:But it is so easy. Look!

Astonished, all the people kneel before him.

Arthur:Father, Brother, what is all this? Why are you kneeling?

Hector: Read the words on the blade!

Arthur:"Whoso pulleth this sword ... the rightwise king ..."

But how can that be? Who am I?

Merlin: You are King Uther's son - The King of England

Long live the King, long live King Arthur!
