Loss of plosion

Phonetic phenomena

t, d, p, b, k, g + t, d, p, b, k, g

What time?

This is a case of loss of plosion. When two plosive consonants ([t] & [t]) are in contact at a word junction, there is a complete loss of plosion of the first consonant.

Speak

This is a case of loss of aspiration. When the plosive consonant [p] is preceded by the fricative consonant [s] at the beginning of the word in a stressed syllable, there is loss of aspiration of the plosive consonant.

t, d, p, b, k, g + n, m

Didn't

This is a case of nasal plosion. When the plosive consonant [d] and the nasal sonorant [n] are in contact within a word, the plosion of the plosive consonant takes place at the same time with the articulation of the sonorant (the air stream passes through the nasal cavity).

Glance

This is a case of lateral plosion. When the plosive consonant [g] and the lateral sonorant [l] are in contact within a word, the plosion of the plosive consonant takes place at the same time with the articulation of the sonorant (the air stream passes along the sides of the tongue).

t, d, p, b, k, g + s, z, f, v, ∫,

Stops

This is a case of fricative plosion. When the plosive consonant [p] precedes the fricative consonant [s] within a word, the plosion of the plosive consonant takes place at the same time with the articulation of the fricative.

t, d, n, l, s, z + θ, ð

Ninth

This is a case of regressive assimilation affecting the place of articulation. The alveolar consonant [n] becomes dental.
