Date: 2015-10-07; view: 570.

1. The problem of the definition of intonation. Intonation and prosody.

2. The components of the intonation and their functions. The prosodic characteristics of speech:

a) melody, or pitch of the voice;

b) sentence stress, or accent;

c) tempo, pausation, and rhythm;

d) tamber/tambre/timbre, or voice quality.

3. The structure of intonation pattern.

4. Types of intonation.

5. Functions of intonation and prosody.

Tasks and exercises:

1. Transcribe and intone the sentences below, point to the communicative centres. Divide the sentences into rhythmic groups, state whether the unstressed syllables are proclitics or enclitics:

Jane was as pale as a ghost.

We'll buy a coat or something to protect you from the cold.

We have never quarrelled with each other.

Spending money is easy, making it may prove more of a problem.

2. Divide the following sentences into as many sense groups as possible. Pay attention to the modification of meaning in some of them. Say what prosodic features may be used to make the meaning of the sentences different:

Smiling Tom entered the room.

If Peter swam he would reach the shore safely.

The doctor said one of the patients was excited.

One of the teachers says the student was calm.

3. Read the following joke. What phonetic phenomenon causes the ambiguity?

“Must I stick it on myself?” asked a lady who bought a postage stamp at the post office.

“No, madam,” replied the counter clerk, “it's much better to stick it on the envelope.”

4. Listen to the recorded sentences (ten sentences) and intone them. Speak on the type, meaning and function of the intonation.
