Ex.1 Identify interjections in these ten sentences. Comment on their function. Translate the sentences into Russian.

  1. Yowza! That is a fine looking car.
  2. Hurray! It is a snow day and school is cancelled.
  3. It is so exciting, my goodness, I just can't believe it.
  4. Joe was late to school and yikes, the teacher was mad.
  5. Oh! I can't believe how nice you look.
  6. Well, gee, that sure is a kind thing to say.
  7. Boo! I scared you.
  8. Woops, I dropped the milk and it spilled.
  9. Yay, it is finally Friday and the work week is over.
  10. Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

Ex.2 Give a characteristic sound of an animal.

A cat mews.

A cow

A dog

A frog

A pig

A duck

A wolf

A lion

A frog

A hen

Ex.3 Give Russian equivalents of the sound-imitating verbs.

Hiccup, peck, peep, pitter-patter, pop, huff, bleep, buzz, champ, clap.

Ex. 4 Find Russian equivalents of the interjections.

Bang, eh, faug, gee, mum, oops, ouch, pooh, tut-tut, wow.

Analyse the following extract from Artemus Ward:

"Sit down, my fren," sed the man in black close; "yu miskomprehend me. I meen that the perlitercal ellermunts are orecast with black klouds, 4 boden a friteful storm."

"Wall," replide I, "in regard to perlittercal ellerfunts і don't know as how but what they is as good as enny other kind of ellerfunts. But і maik bold to say thay is all a ornery set and unpleasant to hav round. They air powerful hevy eaters and take up a right smart chans of room."

The man in black close rusht up to me and sed, "How dair yu insult my neece, yu horey heded vagabone? Yu base exhibbiter of low wax figgers - you woolf in sheep's close," and sow 4th.
