1. K.Mansfield's fictions are known to be founded on Symbolist principles.

- Islands were traditionally thought of as symbols of an unattainable paradise. Can this meaning be relevant for ‘The two big windows faced the water; he could see the boats and the barges swinging up and down, and the tinge of an island planted with trees, like a round bouquet.'?

- Circle all the indications of flowers in the story. What symbolic reverberations arise from the image of flowers?

- What period of human life do you associate with the following:

the first spring rain, the smell of buds, trees...peppered with new green, half opened buds and spears of green, a little kitten...who used to...pretend to be a lion?

1. The pink colour is considered a symbol of purity – how is it emphasized?

2. What could the egg symbolize in the story? Could the similarity in shape suggest an association with heart? Pay attention to the repetition of ‘one' emphasized by detachment and climax in h p17.
