Communicating using social networks

Create a profile

Get started with social networks

To get started using social media you simply sign up for free to one of the social networking websites and create a profile for yourself.

Here you can enter basic details about yourself and your interests and you can add a photo too.

Once you are signed up you can search for people you know and add them as friends.

You simply type in their name, click ‘search' and when you find the right person you can send them a friend request, which they can either accept or decline.

Other people can also search for your social networking profile and send you a friend request.

But don't worry, if for any reason you don't want to be added to their network, you can simply decline their request.

Social media can help you stay in touch with people across the world, view their photos and see their activities.

You can communicate in many ways using social media, you can send

messages, post comments or chat in real time when other people are online at the same time as you.

You can also send “status updates”, this allows you to let all the people in your social network know what your current activities or thoughts are.

Reading status updates is an easy way to keep up to date with what the people in your social network have been up to. You can also add comments to status updates to let your friends know what you think about their activities.

You can also send messages using social media, these are just like emails but are built into the social media websites, so you can easily add links, photos or videos to your messages.
