Organise Events with social networks

Make sure all your friends turn up!

There are a number of ways you can organise an event using social media. A simple way to do this is to send a message with details of the event out to everyone in your network who you want to attend.

A more flexible method is creating an event page. This is a page on your social network where you can list the details of an event – date, time, location – everything a person could need to know to turn up at the right place, at the right time, on the right day.

You can choose to make this an "open event", which anyone can see, or you can only allow the people you choose to access the event page. This is useful if you don't want random strangers turning up.

On the event page guests can confirm whether they are able to attend or not so you can easily see how many people to expect.

Social media also makes it very easy to share the organisation of the event, for instance you and your friends might all want to work together to organise a surprise birthday party. You can communicate with each other by posting messages on the event page.

One last thing: while you are organising your first event using social media, don't forget the people who don't use social media.

Social networks allow people to share their interests and communicate with each other in order to form online groups, clubs and forums.

If you have a specific hobby or interest you can join an online group and meet lots of like-minded people. These are areas of social media websites where people have set up pages to share their interest in a certain hobby or subject. You can send messages, comment, post photos and videos and arrange events, all in relation to your specific area of interest.

You can set up or join groups and pages about whatever you like. It could be about a hobby or a sport or Italian cookery. There are groups entirely devoted to a specific film or book, fictional character or actor. You can send messages to other people in the group in just the same way you do with your friends.

One thing you should remember is that, unlike your personal profile and network of friends, the groups and forums you join are public spaces accessible to anyone. They're not the best place to reveal personal information.
