Ivano-Frankivsk, often called eastern Carpathian's "gate", lies in the south west of Ukraine at the distance of 150-300 km from the borders of Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia. It is the city of regional significance, administrative, economic and cultural center of Precarpathian region. Ivano-Frankivsk is famous as an educational centre. 7 higher educational institutions of III-IV accreditation levels are recorded in the city and more than 40 thousand students study there. The major ones are: National Medical University, National Technical University of Oil and Gas, Precarpathian National University named after V.Stefanyk. State establishment Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University (IFNMU) is a modern institution of higher education with rich traditions. It is also one of the oldest and leading medical higher institutions of Ukraine and the former USSR. The university history started in 1945 as Stanislavski State Medical Institute. At that time, there were 395 students and 47 teachers, including several doctors and candidates of medical science. Before 1978 the institute had had only a medical faculty, then a stomatological faculty was founded. In 1992 it became the Academy and in 2008 it was honoured the title of National University. All the educational programs of the University are regulated and approved by the Ministry of Education & Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine. There are the following specialties at the university: General Medicine, Dentistry, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Nursing. The course of study lasts for 3-6 years depending upon the specialty. About 5000 foreign students from almost 40 countries, including the USA, Western Europe, Australia, all regions of Africa and Asia, are studying in IFNMU. Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University teaches 185 medical courses. More than 50 chairs and departments provide the educational process. Due to good facilities, high qualification level of the teaching staff, scientific and methodical provision Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University gained the leading position in the country. Modern lecture halls and labs, library, computer classes with Internet access, gym with the training equipment, swimming-pool, rest camps on the Black Sea and in the Carpathian mountains are at the students' disposal. Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University possesses an excellent system of hostel accommodation. It owns three hostel buildings providing lodging for over 2000 students.
