Exercise 28 Read and find the answers to the following questions: For a jitter-cut sensory-overload spot that requires an improvisational shooting style, I may not be the best choice of director. I believe that organization and thorough pre-production allow for better and more effective image-making. To me, a thirty-second spot is a thirty-second movie, and I take a very systematic, cinematic approach to creating it. My workflow emphasizes pre-production. I begin by discussing the concept with the client or agency creative team, read (or write) the script, and then determine the best way to tell the story on the screen. I personally scout and shot-list every project in advance, and I collaborate with a professional storyboard artist on detailed boards. I do not arrive on the set and waste precious time figuring out where the camera should go, or how to block the actors. While I always leave room for flexibility, I make those creative decisions in advance, so that, when it's time to roll, I can focus on directing the talent, lighting and camera. In addition to my film-school training, and strong background in still photography, I have worked as a gaffer, camera assistant, and audio operator, and I edit most of the projects I direct. So, I understand what it takes to get the job done properly, and I know how to get the maximum production value from any budget. My style is clean and organized, and favors narrative work. I don't shoe-horn trendy creative concepts into a piece for which they may not be appropriate. My goal is to communicate my client's message to their target audience as effectively as possible, and I use my training, experience, and personal vision to make that happen.
