ECONOMICS

 

Teacher:Let's start our lesson. By the way, how many lectures on economics do you have weekly?

Student A:This term we shall have three lectures a week on economics and related subjects.

Teacher:Very good. I hope then you will easily understand all the texts we shall study.

Student B:Shall we speak only on economics at our lessons?

Teacher:Oh, no. Every month we shall have three or four lessons on everyday English.

Student C:It is a very good thing. And may I ask you another question?

Teacher:Why, certainly.

Student C:What kind of texts shall we study?

Teacher:Mostly they are extracts from various original sources. In many cases they are slightly adapted.

Student D:Shall we read newspapers?

Teacher:Well, you see, some texts were borrowed from the Financial Times, the Times and the Economist. So, I hope it will help you to read English press. In future we may discuss the newspaper reports on the business news you will choose for yourselves.

 

1. Read and translate the following words paying attention to the prefixes and suffixes:

to employ employee employer employment unemployment

2. Choose the correct word:

1. A lot of people (employ,are employed) in this industry.

2. (Employment, Unemployment) is unfortunately growing in the country.

3. Three young (employs, employees) took part in the experiment.

4. The (employ, employer) gave an interview to the journalist last week.

5. The (unemployment, employee) figures for the economy give an indicator of the level of activity.

1. Revise the Future Indefinite Tense.

Shall, will + Infinitive- affirmative form, shall, will + not + Infinitive- negative form

e. g.I shall read this article at home.

They will not work tomorrow.

Will you prepare the report next week?

2. Make the sentences in negative and interrogative form and translate them:

1) The contract will be ready the day after tomorrow.

2) I shall phone you in half an hour.

3) They will make an appointment for Tuesday.

4) The prices will be acceptable to us.

5) They will have an English lesson on Monday.

6) I shall come to Moscow to do some business.

7) We shall sign a contract for raw materials with a German firm.

3. Translate these sentences into English:

1) В этом семестре у нас будет три лекции в неделю по экономике.

2) Тогда вы хорошо поймете все тексты.

3) Мы будем говорить только об экономике?

4) Каждый месяц у нас будет три- четыре урока по разговорному английскому языку.

5) Какие тексты мы будем изучать?

6) Мы будем читать статьи из английских газет.
