UNIT 1 Word lists NEW PROGRESS TO PROFICIENCY 1. accomplishment – an achievement, a completion, a special skill or ability acquired by training or practice 2. tedious –long, tiring, uninteresting, boring 3. grudge - a strong feeling of anger and dislike resulting from a past insult or injury 4. strain - a state of tension or exhaustion caused by severe demands or pressures 5. swelling- a part of your body which has become bigger because of illness or injury 6. liable - very likely to happen 7. vulnerable - able to be easily physically, emotionally, or mentally hurt, influenced or attacked 8. syndrome - a type of negative behaviour or mental state that is typical of a person in a particular situation 9. attainment –skill or accomplishment in some branch of knowledge, an achievement 10. maudlin - self-pityingly or tearfully sentimental 11. endeavour -an earnest attempt to achieve something, earnest and industrious effort. 12. stamina - the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort. 13. nuance - a subtle difference in or shade of meaning, expression, colour, etc. 14. bewildered - feeling confused 15. unruffled equanimity -perfect calmness 16. charisma – charm and magnetism, a special power some people possess naturally which makes them able to influence other people and attract their attention and admiration 17. recondite –obscure, not commonly known, difficult to understand
