Model A: doing English – doing French → I prefer doing English to doing French.
Model B: football – rugby → I prefer football to rugby.

B 1) poetry – prose; 2) language – literature; 3) cottages – blocks of flats; 4) Maugham's novels – his comedies; 5) Shakespeare's tragedies – his comedies; 6) Dega's drawings – his paintings.

Work in pairs and take a role each:

Situation 1.

a) you are a specialist who is going on business to London but doesn't know the English language well;

b) you are his friend who is giving advice how to master English.

Situation 2.

a) you are a student who wants to concentrate on communication skills;

b) you are a teacher who is ready to help him.
