The Future Indefinite (Simple) Tense

Ex.2. Put the following sentences in the form of Imperative . Remember that the person addressed is often mentioned in a direct commands.

1. He told her to switch off the TV.

2. She told Tom to shut the door.

3. I asked Mary to lend me her pen.

4. He warned me not to believe everything I heard.

5. I told them not to hurry.

6. The secretary asked me to fill up the form.

7. Ordered the bank clerk to open the safe.

8. Told us to do whatever we liked.

9. Warned then not to miss the train.

10. Advised his client to read it before he signed it.

11. Warned the lady not to touch the gates.

12. Told him to pull as hard as he could.

13. Advised us not to lend anything.

14. Warned the people on the platform to stand clear of the doors.

15. Ask the customer to pay at the cask desk.

16. The notice told us to leave space clear.

17. I reminded them to write to their parents.

18. Warned her to think well before she answered.

The Future Tense comprises:

* Two parts in the positive, i.e. ”shall”/ “will” V0

* Two parts in the negative and interrogative, i.e. “shall”/ “will V0

Used to express intention (in the future) at the moment of decision . Typical future time markers include: tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, next week / month, year …/ etc.

I. Positive form

e.g. Next year this magazine will publish some articles on the wider use of atomic energy in Europe.


 

II. Negative form.

e.g. The, wire will not `become red at this temperature.

 


III. Interrogative form

 

 

e.g. `Will the students of your department `study statistics in their second year?

 

 

Short forms : I, we shall/I`ll,/ we`ll/

Shall not /shan`t/

Will not/ won`t/

 

Uses: Will

-Will expressing a future intention (we decide to do something at the

moment of speaking):

e.g.: I`ll have a cup of coffee, please.

e.g.: I`ll see you next week.

-Will expressing a future prediction:

e.g.: I think it will rain tomorrow.

- Will expressing a promise :

e.g.: I`ll bring you the book tomorrow.

-Will expressing threats and warnings:

e.g.: If you do this again, I ` ll kill you.

e.g.: Stop or I`ll shoot.

-Will expressing a decision:

e.g.: We`ll go back home at 10.
