The question of (îáåñïå÷åíèÿ), by artificial means the necessary heat to keep our bodies in comfort has undoubtedly occupied the minds of human beings all (íà ïðîòÿæåíèè âåêîâ). In the beginning man relied on (èçëó÷åíèå) from the sun as do the animals. No doubt he was sheltered in caves and mud huts during very cold weather, clothing himself with the skins of animals which he killed and in this way, (ïðåäîõðàíÿÿ) his body from losing too much heat.

Then followed the (îòêðûòèå) of making a fire, which was man's first attempt at (èñêóññòâåííûé îáîãðåâ). This, (íåñîìíåííî), was first performed in the open air, but later in caves or other (çàêðûòûõ ïîìåùåíèÿõ) in which he lived and so provided it with artificial heat. The (äûì) and vitiated air had to find a way out. Later, an opening was formed in the (êðûøå) or side of the enclosure through which the smoke could escape. Then the idea came to the minds of these primitive men to form a hood for collecting the smoke and eventually, a (òðóáà, äûìîõîä) was formed for conveying the smoke and creating a draft to draw away the smoke and gases. Our present open fireplaces and chimneys are heirlooms coming down from these age-old methods.
