1.What have these people been doing and how long? Make sentences using an appropriate verb in the Present Perfect Continuous Tense:

Model:Catherine went to the supermarket an hour ago. She is still there → Catherine has been doing shopping for an hour.

1. Peter's mum began cooking 2 hours ago. She hasn't finished yet.

2. The teams started playing football an hour ago. They haven't finished yet.

3. The school headmaster started speaking half an hour ago. She hasn't stopped yet.

4. Mr. Clark began building his house half a year ago. He hasn't built the house yet.

5. My younger sister Mary started doing her home work 3 hours ago. She hasn't done it yet.

6. Mr. Brown is a physicist. He is a well-known scientist. Some months ago he began performing a number of various experiments linked with the problem of conserving the mass. He hasn't finished his last experiment yet.

 

2. Match Column A with Column B to make correct sentences and to finish situation:

Column A:

1. How long have you been waiting?

2. Peter is in the garden.

3. You've been studying all the morning.

4. Ann's been exercising a lot recently.

5. It's very cold outside.

6. Bill is rather tired.

3. Translate the sentences paying attention to the forms of the Present Perfect Continuous Tense or the Past Perfect Continuous Tense:

1. Those students are in the laboratory now. They are heating and cooling some metal rods. They have been in the laboratory since 11 a.m. It is 2 p.m. now. That means that they have been heating and cooling those rods for 3 hours.

2. They are students of Institute of Physics and Mathematics. They have been studying physics and mathematics since 2011.

3. Look! It has been raining. – Why do you think so? – Oh, everything is very wet out of doors.

4. When I came into the lab yesterday at noon, some of my group-mates were carrying out some various experiments. They had been carrying them out for about 2 hours but hadn't completed the task yet.

5. The problem was so interesting that Peter had been thinking at it all day yesterday.

6. Do you know that Professor Brown has been studying the problem of mass conservation for some 15 years? Last year he published a monograph on the problem.

7. He is very interested in the Earth and its satellites. He has been investigating the Earth and space for 20 years.

8. It is a well known fact that one of the greatest scientists of all times Albert Einstein had been working on the special theory of relativity for all his life.

 

4. Translate into English using the forms of the Present Simple Tense, the Present Perfect Tense, the Present Perfect Continuous Tense, the Past Simple Tense, the Past Perfect Tense and the Past Perfect Continuous Tense:

1. Сейчас 3 часа дня. Лекция только что началась. Это последняя лекция на сегодня. Студенты довольно сильно устали, т.к. они находятся в Университете уже около 5 часов.

2. Исаак Ньютон описал движение тел с обычной скоростью к 20-м годам 18 века

3. Мы находимся в лаборатории электричества. Молодой ученый демонстрирует новое устройство в течение последних 20 минут.

4. В разных странах мира ученые изучают металлы со Средних Веков.

5. У них были очень красные лица. – Они, вероятно, о чем-то долго спорили.

6. Современная физика успешно развивается с конца 19 века.

7. Он рассказал много интересного о том, что свойства железа очень сильно отличаются от свойств алюминия. Он работал над этим вопросом с окончания университета.

8. Последние 2 недели у Питера есть новый IPhone 3G. Он его купил, когда был на конференции в Лондоне.
