1. Purpose To avoid marine pollution by sewage.
2.Scope Description of handling of sewage.
3.References * Annex IV of MARPOL 73/78 * Regulations on protection of the coastal seas' waters from pollution, 1984 (territorial seas and inland waters of the former USSR). * HELCOM Recommendations.
"Sewage" -means: - drainage and other wastes from any form of toilets, urinals and WC scuppers;
- drainage from medical premises (dispensary, sick bay, etc.) via wash basins, wash tubes and scuppers located in such premises; - drainage from spaces containing living animals; - other wastes when mixed with the drainages defined above.
Chief-Engineer ensures that: - standard discharge connection for sewage disposal to the reception facilities comply with the Regulation 11 of Annex IV of MARPOL 73/78; - if necessary sewage can be collected in sewage holding tank; - comminutation and/or disinfection systems are workable (if available); - sewage treatment plant is workable (if available).
Fourth- Engineer Officer - asks a permission from the officer in a charge on the bridge for sewage discharge; - when permission obtained, accompleshes the sewage discharge into the sea.
Sewage discharge into the sea is allowed: - if comminuted and disinfected, than outside 4 nautical miles from the nearest land; - if not comminuted and disinfected, than outside 12 nautical miles from the nearest land; - discharge is not instantaneously but at a moderate rate; - ship is en route; - ship is proceeding at not less than 4 knots.
