POSITIVE NEGATIVE

Presentation

The instructions given by the Technical Manager were of 2 types: POSITIVEand NEGATIVE.Look at the examples below.

You must check if he wants the cabinet. You mustn't use any other toner except 9450.

You ought to try to persuade him ... You oughtn't to need any force.

You should assemble the copier ... You shouldn't use a surface ...

You are to take out the main copier. You are not to assemble it ...

You aresupposed to just click it into You are not supposed to use force.

The above verbs consist of 2 groups, as follows:

The modals don't change their form with the subject, e.g. You must check ...

He mustn't pour in the toner .. .

They should try to . ..

We oughtn't to use force ...

2. to be (supposed) to

Here the verb to be changes with the subject, e.g. I am (supposed) to assemble . . .

You are (supposed) to shake the toner ... Notice the position of not in the negative form:

He is not (supposed) to supply free copier paper.

We are not (supposed) to presume the customer doesn't want a cabinet.
