Container Ship

Cargo that has been containerized is carried by container ships. The use of containers increases every year. Containers are most often measured in Twenty Feet Equivalent Units (TEU's) and are stowed in a cellular arrangement in Rows, Bays and Tiers. The bay-row-tier system follows a system of numerical coordinates relating to length, width and height. According to this principle, bays are the container blocks in the transverse direction, rows are the lengthwise rows and tiers are the vertical layers. Thus, each container can easily be found.

A container is designed to be handled mechanically throughout the transit. The hull of a container ship is simply an enormous warehouse divided into cells by vertical guide rails. Like all other specialized ships designed to carry unitized cargo container ships have a high service speed ranging from 16 to 26 knots, and even up to 30 knots, in dependence of the ship's deadweight.
