Reading and Comprehension

Task I. Read the following text to learn about managers' functions.

Manager's Functions

Are there certain activities common to all managers? Can we define the task of a manager? A French industrialist Henry Fayol wrote in 1916 a classic definition of the manager's role. He said that to manage is to plan, to organize, to command, to coordinate and to control. This definition is still accepted by many people today, though some writers on management have modified Fayol's description. Instead of talking about command they say a manager must motivate or direct and lead other workers.

Henry Fayol's definition of manager's functions is useful. However, in most companies activities of a manager depend on the level at which he/she is working. Managers – or management positions can be classified in low-level, middle-level and top-level managers.

Low-level or first-line managers are responsible for the production of goods and services. They spend most of their time solving day-to-day problems. They have such titles as line manager, office manager and foreman.

Middle managers are responsible for business units and their departments. They direct the activities of low-level managers. Managers at this level spend a great deal of time communicating, coordinating and making decisions on the daily operation of their organization. Examples of middle managers are division manager, department manager, manager of quality control.

Top managers are responsible for the overall management of the organization, planning, policy making and the relations of the company with the outside world. They make decisions on the future of the company. Typical titles of top managers are President, vice president, chairman and chief executive officer.
