DEVELOPING SPEAKING SKILLS

Task 35. Having read the material of the unit, how would you answer the questions:

· How would you characterise the term “nonverbal communication”?

· What are the three common types of nonverbal communication?

· How can bodies send non-word messages?

· What are communication behaviours learned from?

A: Hello! Haven't seen you for ages!
B: Hello! I was on a scientific mission last month, taking part in the conference on nonverbal communication.
A: Oh, that sounds interesting! What does this type of communication mean?
B: You know, nonverbal and non-word communication means all communication that occurs without words. Nonverbal communication accounts for more of a total message that words do.
A: So, I can see, the subject is a broad one.
B: Yes, and because it is so broad, nonverbal communication is quite vague and imprecise. For instance, a frown on someone's forehead is sometimes interpreted to mean worry.
A: The number of possible meanings multiplied even more when we consider the cross-cultural side of communication. Culture teaches us about body positions, movements and various factors that affect human relationship.
B: Thus the meanings we give to nonverbal symbols will vary depending on how our culture has conditioned us. So, because of these numerous meanings, you need to be sensitive to what others intend with nonverbal communication. And you need to make some allowance for error in the meanings you receive, from nonverbal symbols.
