Keep evolving.

Jon Hurwitz left guidebook publishing to start a business designing graphics for stores and restaurants, a skill he mastered in his first pursuit. And when Michael Tentnowski found that he enjoyed starting a venture more than running one, he hired an assistant to manage the company. He now coordinates Virginia Tech's small-business development program in Blacksburg.

Another example of an entrepreneur whose business is evolving is a recent Temple grad who started a salon specializing in braiding children's hair. Her salon was a hit with busy professional moms and she plans to open more. But she's also now targeting a new, untapped market: home-bound senior citizens.

"Try experimenting with a lot of things," suggests Chapman. "Take risks and play around with stuff. After all, what's the downside?" he says. You can always get a regular job if you find that entrepreneurism isn't for you.
