Unit 12 Crime
- judge - someone whose job is to make decisions in a court of law
E.g.: The judge sentenced her to ninety days in prison.
- jury - a group of people, usually 12, who judge a court case
- prosecution lawyer /ˌprɒsɪˈkjuːʃ(ə)n/ - a lawyer whose job is to prove in court that someone accused of a crime is guilty
- defence lawyer - a lawyer whose job is to defend someone accused of a crime in court defendant - someone who has been accused of a crime and is on trial
- verdict - an official judgment made in a court
E.g.: The jury took 16 hours to reach a verdict.
- trial /ˈtraɪəl/- the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent

- court - a place where trials take place and legal cases are decided, especially in front of a judge and a jury

- to be guilty of sth - someone who is guilty has committed a crime

- to act on impulse – to act suddenly and without thinking first
E.g.: Acting on impulse, he knocked on her door.
- to break into a house - to get into a building or car using force, usually to steal something
- to stalk smb /stɔːk/ - to follow and watch someone all the time in a threatening way, because of an extremely strong interest in them
E.g.: He had continued stalking her despite a warning from the police.
stalker /ˈstɔːkə(r)/ - someone who develops an extremely strong interest in another person and follows and watches them all the time in a threatening way
