Thousands of football fans queued at Wembley early yesterday hoping for a ticket for England's Euro-96 quarterfinal and another dose of euphoria following the 4 – 1 victory over Holland.

Thousands more swamped the telephone ticket line, which sold its allocation of 3,000 seats for Saturday's game before 9 a.m.

“There were so many calls, we couldn't carry on with the hotline and we wanted to reward the 2,000 people who had made the effort to come to Wembley for tickets,” said a Euro-96 spokesman.

A line of fans formed at 5.30 a.m. – still heady with a mixture of excitement and disbelief following England's defeat of Holland, their best performance in decades.
