A. Without using your dictionary, write an approximate definition or a synonym for a highlighted words in the following sentences.

1. Easter Island is a little island in Polynesia surrounded by one million empty square miles of Pacific Ocean.

2. Archeologists study extinct cultures by examining abandoned house foundations, stone tools, and food remains and making guesses from these clues about what life in the past may have been like.
