Exercise 2. a) Paraphrase:

1.I waited until she was on the move and waved to her as she went up. 2. It whiled away many hours of waiting in the firemen's post for the blitz on London. ..3.1 expect he was a temporary employee, for Swiss waiters are the most agreeable in the world, and I remember thinking that he wouldn 't last long. 4. ... but there was only the Lausanne daily which I had already scanned at breakfast. 5. The small group diminished in number and curiosity as people took the ski-lift up. 6. It might cost me my job. 7. Doctor Fischer seemed to permeate the room like smoke.

b) Translate into Russian:

1. The road was not bad, but ... there were icy patches... 2. By two о 'clock in the morning the words returned to me... 3. ''Don't crowd her, man. She has to have air.' 4. As I remembered the story, one character challenged the other to drink what was apparently called a scone... 5. Anna-Louise's money from her mother was held in some kind of a trust: she had received the income only.

c) Comment or explain:

1. I never fancied Anna-Luise skiing on an empty slope. It was like bathing from an empty beach. 2. To me there always seems to be a horrible complacency about oriental wisdom: "To cut..." 3. 'Everyone knows that the sights of cats or rats, the crushing of a coal etc. May unhinge the reason.' 4.1 could tell from their manner that this watch carried no ordinary guarantee. 5. The implication of his advice didn't strike home to me until I was dialing. 6. He was a Toad himself- the King Toad of them all.

 

Exercise 3. Get ready to answer the questions:

1. Why was Anne-Luise so keen on skiing? Why did they drive to Les Paccots early in the morning? Why didn't her husband want her to ski down an empty slope? How did Mr. Jones pass away the time while Anna-Luise was skiing?

2. What indicated that there had been an accident? Why didn't Mr. Jones suspect that the accident might have happened to his wife? How did the rescue-men explain what had happened to Anna-Luise?

3. Why did Mr. Jones telephone Dr. Fischer? Why couldn't he get Dr. Fischer on the phone? What was he doing while Anna-Luise was being operated? Why did Mr. Jones decide to finish with the
documents on the same day?

4. Where did Mr. Jones have his wife buried? Who was present at the funeral? Why didn't Dr. Fischer come?

5. What were Mr. Jones' plans for the future after his wife's death? In what way did he decide to take his own life? What did Dr. Fischer want to see him for? Why didn't Dr. Fischer phone his son-in-law himself? Why did Jones call him the King Toad?

Exercise 4. a) Discuss the following:

Which definition of happiness is more appealing to you and why: "To cut with a sharp knife a bright green water-melon..." or "to be sitting warm in a Swiss cafe, watching the white slopes outside..."? Give your own definition of happiness.

 

b) Write a paragraph on either problem. !
