PRACTICE SECTION 9
1. Describe the stages of the functional system of simultaneous interpretation.
2. What steps do these stages consist of?
3. When does a simultaneous interpreter “take decision” to interpret the message?
4. Is it possible to interpret being guided by perception of the SL signal only and having no profound understanding of the sense of the message?
5. Is your answer to question 4 is “yes”, then what are the necessary requirements applicable to such kind of interpreting?

7.What are the main preconditions and practical implications of anticipation in simultaneous interpreting?
Assignment 1.Use techniques of anticipation to complete the following messages. Suggested steps of doing this exercise:
a) One of students reads the message and stops where there are dots.
b) All others suggest their versions of what they anticipate may come next.
c) The reader-student or the teacher reads out the variants from the keys at the end of the book as they appeared in real-life discourse.

Assignment 2. Fill in the “gaps” in Text 9.1 using techniques of anticipation. Suggested steps of doing this exercise:
a) Listen to the phonogram and press “pause” button before gaps marked by dots. Two dots mean that there should be two words, etc.
b) Suggest your option of what you anticipate may appear in the gap.
c) Depress the “pause” button and listen to the actual variant as it was used. Check what you have heard with the keys at the end of the book. Don't look into the keys before you complete steps “a” and “b”. Pick up some other useful keywords from the keys.
d) Suggest arguments “pro” and “contra” for the anticipations that you have made.
e) Perform interpretation of Text 9.1 in the simultaneous mode into English looking into its transcript (з опорою на писемний текст).
