Have you ever been infected with viruses?Date: 2015-10-07; view: 417. If your computer is infected with an IRC Trojan, you can learn how to remove it at NoHack.net. The NoHack website contains fixes for most IRC Trojans. If you are infected with some other type of virus, you should scan your computer with AntiVirus software, and/or visit one of the websites. There are a lot of malicious little children, (of all ages), that are trying to spread viruses on the Internet... especially on IRC. However, if you are careful and use a little common sense, you can still safely trade files. If you suspect that a file in your upload/download directory is infected with a virus, don't panic. A virus is harmless as a file on your hard drive, just make sure that you never double-click on, (or "open"), a suspicious file, or your computer may become infected. No single file is worth the risk. If you are unsure about a file on your hard drive, delete it. Do not allow any of the following types of files to be sent to you. If you find one of these types of files in your upload/download directory, delete it... and remember, the extension farthest to the right is the only one that matters. Some people will try to trick you by calling a virus something like: Mypicture.bmp.vbs. Don't fall for it... this file is NOT a .bmp, it is a .vbs, and it is a virus.
Some types of files are safe to download because they are just data files, (they do not "execute"). They are associated with another program which reads the data. For example: mp3's, pictures, movies and most text files are safe to download. The following is a list of file extensions that are safe to download:
NOTE: ZIP files are used to compress several files into one file... there are other forms of compression, such as RAR and ACE, but ZIP is used more than any other form of compression. It is safe to open a compressed file in Winzip or any other decompression program, but beware of the files inside the compressed file. If any of the files has an extension that is listed in the "NOT SAFE" table, and you don't implicitly trust the person that sent you the file, delete the compressed file. Everyone should own an AntiVirus program and scan their hard drive regularly, but just because you scan a file with an AntiVirus program, (and it doesn't detect a virus), does not mean that the file is safe... that's right, I'm saying that AntiVirus programs are not and cannot be reliable. Question: How can an AntiVirus program protect against a new virus? Answer: It can't. In some cases an AntiVirus program is able to detect a newly created virus... if it conforms to a certain pattern... but new viruses are being created every day, and they don't all fit the same pattern. Therefore,ALL AntiVirus programs are unreliable. They will detect viruses 90% of the time, so it is definitely worth having the software, but you should not rely too heavily on a program that is not 100 %. TIP: You should always make backups of your most important files, just in case your computer becomes infected and you lose everything on your hard drive. If you are even slightly suspicious of a file you have received via the Internet, delete it. Update Your Virus Definitions Often! Many people buy an AntiVirus program and never update it. If you don't update your AntiVirus software, you wasted your money when you bought it. Each month new virus definitions are added and offered as an update via the Internet. If you do not know how to update your AntiVirus software, you should read the manual. If you don't have a manual, read the help file, (click help on the menubar in the AntiVirus program), or search the web.
