There's one necessary ingredient in any circus: the Clowns. They tell jokes, they do funny things, and the crowd laughs. But some people say that clowns are sad. They paint their faces, but underneath, they see the absurdity of life.

“What a clown!”

There are clowns in most cultures. If one of our friends is good at telling jokes, we often say "He's a bit of a clown". If someone is fooling around in class, the teacher may say "Stop clowning around!". So - clowns are universal. Where do they come from?

Well, there were clowns in Ancient Egypt. And in Ancient China. When Pisarro went to Mexico in 1520 A.D., he found clowns there like those in Europe. In some cultures, clowns had an important social or religious role. They could even cure illnesses.
