Verbs with two objects in the passive

Exercise 6. Write the correct tag to these sentences.

1. The house is being painted at the moment, ___?

Some verbs can have two objects, e.g. ask, give, offer, pay, promise, send, show, teach, tell, etc.

Someone sent me a telegram.

I was sent atelegram.

A telegram was sent to me.

NOTE:

It is more usual for passive sentences to begin with the person.

My father was offered an interesting, well-paid job.

Exercise 7. Rewrite these sentences in the passive.

Example: Someone will tell her the news.

She will be told the news./The news will be told to her.

2. They send us a lot of interesting books every year.

3. They will pay him his salary every month.

6. The hotel staff showed us our room.

We use by + doerof the action when it is important to say who or what does, did or will do the action.

Mary was arrested by the police.

A number of trees were blown down by the strong wind.

We use with + instrument or material.

I was hit with an umbrella, (instrument)

The room was filled withsmoke, (material)

If a verb is followed by a preposition + object, the preposition stays with the verb in apassive sentence.

People shouted at the chairman during his speech. =>The chairman was shouted atduring his speech.
