Unit 12 Crime

1. to give / establish an alibi for smb/ˈælɪbaɪ/

2. barrister- a lawyer in England or Wales who is allowed to speak in the higher law courts

3. capital punishment- the punishment of being legally killed

4. to convict smb of sth/kənˈvɪkt/ - to prove in a court of law that someone is guilty of a crime

E.g.: Robinson was convicted of the murder of his mother and brother.

5. defendant- someone who has been accused of a crime and is on trial

E.g.: Several people spoke in my defence.

6. to be discharged- to be officially allowed or forced to leave an institution such as a hospital, a prison, or the army

E.g.: More than half of all prisoners discharged are reconvicted within two years.

7. to be guilty of sth- someone who is guilty has committed a crime

E.g.: Patrick knew that he was guilty of lying.

8. innocent- not guilty of a crime

E.g.: This new evidence would hopefully prove his innocence.

11. to release on parole-permission for a prisoner to leave prison before the official time if they promise to obey particular rules

E.g.: He could be released on parole in two years.

12. to plead guilty/not guilty of -to say in a court of law whether you are guilty of a crime or not

E.g.: Both defendants pleaded not guilty on all counts.

13. solicitor - in the UK, a lawyer who gives legal advice, writes legal contracts, and represents people in the lower courts of law

14. to bring a suit against smb- a claim or complaint that someone makes in a court of law

E.g.: The family brought a suit against the hospital for negligence.

to sue smb for sth- to make a legal claim against someone, usually to get money from them because they have done something bad to you.

E.g.: Burnett sued the newspaper for libel and won.

15. to be on trial for sth/ˈtraɪəl/- the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent

E.g.: They're on trial for armed robbery.

16. to give a testimony-a formal statement about something that you saw, know, or experienced, usually given in a court of law

E.g.: I was asked to give testimony.
