UNIT 11 Nanotechnology

1. Match words with their definitions.

Implant Nanoscale Residue Contaminant Molecule Stain Nanotechnology Synthetic Tar Tissue

· A substance that makes something dirty

· Something artificial that is put into someone's body in a medical operation

· The smallest particle of a substance that retains all the properties of the substance and is composed of one or more atoms

· Relating to or occurring on a scale of nanometers

· The science of manipulating materials on an atomic or molecular scale especially to build microscopic devices (as robots)

· A substance that remains after a process such as combustion or evaporation

· A coloured patch or dirty mark that is difficult to remove

· Made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product

· A dark, thick flammable liquid distilled from wood or coal, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons, resins, alcohols, and other compounds. It is used in road-making and for coating and preserving timber

· An aggregate of cells usually of a particular kind together with their intercellular substance that form one of the structural materials of a plant or an animal

2. Match the verbs (l-lO) to the definitions (a-j).

1 adjust 2 drain 3 disconnect 4 dismantle 5 examine 6 replace 7 reconnect 8 service 9 tighten 10 top up a carry out planned maintenance b change an old or damaged part c check carefully d empty a liquid e add more fluid to fill a tank to the recommended level f set up carefully by making small changes g take apart assembled components h apply the correct torque, for example to loose bolts i establish a connection again j remove or isolate from a circuit or network

3. Read text and complete the exercise

The word nano comes from the ancient Greek word for

‘dwarf' and nanotechnology is the technology used to

control this tiny nano-world and make it useful to us.

In nanotechnology centimeters and even millimeters are too

small for measuring so scientists use a unit called a

nanometer which is one billionth (1,000,000,000) of a meter!

Because a nanometer is so small we cannot see it with our

eyes or even through a traditional microscope.

A human hair is about 50,000 nanometers wide which is

about the smallest thing we can see with our eyes.

Fill in the missing word:

Example:

1. The word nano comes from the ancient

Greek word for D W A R F.

2. A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ is one billionth of a metre.

3. _ _ _ _ _ are the tiny building blocks of

everything around us.

4. Materials behave _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _at a very small scale.

5. In nanotechnology _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ , physicist, chemists and biologists all work

together to help create new materials and devices.

4. Translate from English into Russian.

molecular- dimension -Quantum -medicine - electronics- biomaterial
