THE SENTENCE

A sentence is a unit of speech whose grammatical structure conforms to the law of the language and which serves as the chief means of conveying a thought.


 

The Subject is the principal part of a two-member sentence which is grammatically independent of the other parts of the sentence and with which the second principal part (the predicate) agrees.

*Complex subject: 1.Subjective Infinitive Construction: The plane is reported to land at 4 p.m.

2. For-to-Infinitive Construction: It's time for the bus to arrive.

3. Subjective Participial Construction: John was heard singing.

4. Gerundial Construction: His answering is essential for us.
