Mathematics is an activity which has as its purpose the formulation and understanding of a complete model of the universe. Mathematics as a science is a collection of branches. The largest branch which deals with the ordinary whole numbers, fractions and irrational numbers is called the real number system. Arithmetic, algebra, the study of functions, the calculus, different equations are the developments of the real number system. This part of maths is termed as the math of number. The second branch is geometry which consists of several geometries. Each branch begins with certain concepts, such as the whole number or integer in the maths of numbers and point, line and triangle in geometry.
Mathematics has its own language. The mathematical language has the form of signs, symbols, equations and formulae. Symbols permit a clear and concise representation of ideas which are sometimes very complex. Mathematical writing is remarkable because it contains much information in a few words.
Mathematicians divide mathematics into pure and applied mathematics. Pure mathematics is an investigation of mathematical theories and ideas. Applied mathematics deals with the application of mathematical theories to the problems in different branches of science. The development of the theory of equations is an example of pure mathematics and the work in cybernetics is an outstanding example of applied mathematics.
