PREFACEDate: 2015-10-07; view: 424. The suggested textbook is aimed at acquiring skills in the linguistic analysis of a literary work, a short story mainly, though in the second part of the textbook the examples of the linguistic analysis of publicistic and popular-scientific texts are also given to be looked upon as illustration of differences between fiction works and those of other styles. Such skills are a part of professional education in the sphere of linguistics. The linguistic analysis of a literary work is aimed at establishing different kinds of relations which consolidate the given piece of literature. Linguistics differentiates between various features which make a fiction work a finished piece of thought that evokes in the reader a certain emotional response. In this respect it fulfils its educational function and gives examples of possible real situations, teaches to understand the reality through generalized presentation of its facts. Linguistic analysis helps deep penetration into the contents of a literary work, shows the possible consequences of the described events, and presents the situation from the point of view of its emotional influence on a person. In this way the linguistic analysis studies the expressive function of a language and describes the means with the help of which a certain atmosphere and attitude towards the characters involved are created. Teaching linguistic analysis is a part of professional education of students at linguistic universities and foreign language departments. The main importance of the course lies in its inter-subject character. The course teaches to apply knowledge obtained by the students in Lexicology, Stylistics and Grammar. Moreover it is closely connected with historical and cultural development of the country of which the contents of a literary work narrate. The skills acquired help penetration into the author's position towards the society, its problems and people with their ability to cope with difficulties, troubles and gain the desired result. The course of linguistic analysis as a part of general oral and written practice, though a rather autonomous one. The linguistic analysis of the text can be regarded as the initial stage of the interpretation of the text. It concentrates on the pure linguistic properties of language units and in this respect differs from the stylistic analysis which deals with tropes. Besides linguistic importance it has a formative character as it aims at esthetic and cultural development of a personality. The ability to understand the message of a literary work depends on a person's intellect. That is why the cognitive development of the younger generation by means of literature is hard to overestimate. Though the amount and variety of literary works are endless, they can be classified according to some repeated features. These common characteristics help differentiation of literary works into genres, certain types of composition, deliberate choice of images, etc. Identification and explanation of these features make up the subject of the course of linguistic analysis of the text. The textbook consists of three parts. The first part deals with theoretic information on the main structural and expressive means that consolidate the work of literature. The second part contains illustrative material with explanation of the functions of linguistic means. The third part gives examples of the texts of different genres with the assignments for the linguistic analysis. The material suggested can be made use of in the class or as a self-study assignment for the students.
