Read the text and group the words from the paragraph on p.85 into the columns according to the number of syllables they contain:

Monosyllabic words Disyllabic words Three-syllable words Four-syllable words

Comment on the peculiarities of the word stress in English.

Find in the text the words containing the lateral sonorant /l/, transcribe them. Comment on the realisation of /l/ in speech.

Find in the text and transcribe the words containing the following vowel phonemes: /aU/, /@U/, and comment on their graphical rules.

In English there are certain words which have two forms of pronunciation: strong or full, and weak or reduced form. There are three degrees of reduction of strong forms:

1) reduction of the length of the vowel without changing its quality ( quantitative reduction): you /ju:/; he /hi:/ - /hi/.

2) the reduction changing the quality of the vowel (qualitative reduction): for /fo:/ - /fə/.

3) the omission of a vowel zero reduction): am /em/ - /m/.

2. Elision (ellipsis, omission, deletion)

in rapid colloquial speech some notional words may loose of their sounds (vowels, consonants). Formal speech tends to retain full form of the words. Elision occurs within a word or word-boundaries: phonetics /founetiks/ - /fnetiks/, camera /kaemərə/ - /kaemrə/.

3. Nasalization of vowels

Slight degree of nasalization marks vowels preceded or followed by [n, m]: never, no, then, men.
