Type 2 – a vowel in a closed syllableDate: 2015-10-07; view: 653. A closed syllable is a syllable which ends in a consonant, for example: pea-nut. According to the 2nd type of reading the English vowels are pronounced in the following way:

NOTES: 1.In some words letter ‘u' ispronounced [ u ], for example: pull, push, bull, full, etc. 3.Very often letter‘o' before n, m, v, th is pronounced [ ʌ ] as in love, mother, etc. 4.In the words ending in –nd , - ld vowels are pronounced according to the 1st type as in child, kind, mild, etc.

Exercise 10.Read the following words, phrases and sentences properly and quickly. Pronounce correctly and distinctly sound [ æ ]. That's flat, and that's that. That's cat and that's mat. That's fat and that's black. Sam's acting the ass. Fancy that! He that hatches matches hatches catches. The cat and the rat: the cat sat on a mat, the cat is fat, the rat sat in a hat, the cat had a nap on the mat, the rat had a nap in the hat. The cat ran into the flat. The man and the lad. The man has a hat. The man has a bag. The fan is in the bag. The lad has a hat. The lad has a bat. The fat man has a black cat.

Type 3 – a vowel + r (+a consonant) The vowels before r are pronounced in the following way:
