My HometownDate: 2015-10-07; view: 430. My hometown is Yekaterinburg. It was founded in 1723 by Vasiliy Tatischev under Peter's the Great order. According to some sources it was named in honor of his wife, Katherine, other sources say it was in honor of Saint Katherine. Yekaterinburg is located in the center of the Urals on the border of Europe and Asia. It is situated in the center of the mining are rich with various natural resources: coal, iron, copper and rare metal ores, precious and ornamental stones, timber and fresh water. The history of Yekaterinburg is long and interesting. It was started as a center of metal-processing industry. Before World War I a number of machine-building works were founded in the city. During the war a lot of works were moved to the city from Moscow and Leningrad. Those works became foundations for Yekaterinburg machine building. The industry of the city made a great contribution into the victory of our country over the fascists. Today Yekaterinburg is one of the largest cities in Russia with a population of around 1.5 million people. It is an important industrial, financial, scientific, educational and cultural center. Such industries as machine-building, iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, construction, pharmaceuticals, chemical, light and others are well developed at present. A lot of banks are functioning in the city. It has railway and air hubs, subway and well-developed transport infrastructure. Yekaterinburg is a center of science and culture. A Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences operates in the city. There are 14 institutions of higher learning, two universities among them. We can find a lot colleges, lycees and secondary schools in Yekaterinburg. That is why Yekaterinburg is called a city of students. Yekaterinburg is cultural center with its theaters, Philharmonic Society, movie-theaters, museums. Today Yekaterinburg is a fast growing city. A lot of new churches, big public buildings, apartment houses are being built all over the city.
