Из двух вариантов - бурение скважины нефтедобывающей компанией или компанией-подрядчиком - преобладает второй. Более 90% всех скважин в странах свободного мира было пробурено независимыми подрядчиками. Это объясняется множеством причин, наиболее важные из которых приведены ниже.

• Работа независимого подрядчика, занимающегося только бурением, обычно более экономически выгодна, чем работа нефтедобывающей компании.

Если нефтедобывающая компания пользуется услугами независимого бурового подрядчика, составляют формальное письменное соглашение или подряд на бурение. Некоторые виды деятельности, например отбор керна, каротаж и опробование скважины, а также спуск обсадной колонны, считаются дополнительной работой, за которую компания - разработчик месторождения обычно рассчитывается с подрядчиком на основе дневной ставки.

По условиям контракта «под ключ», который становится все более распространенным, подрядчик поставляет буровую установку, бригаду, а также все оборудование и материалы, необходимые для бурения скважины, включая каротажное оборудование и оборудование для опробования пласта, буровой раствор, а иногда даже оборудование для обсадной колонны и эксплуатационное оборудование.
