Business Statistics Syllabus

This course introduces the student to statistics with business applications. The course covers both descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics included are: measures of central tendency; measures of dispersion; graphical displays of data; linear regression; basic probability concepts; binomial and normal probability distributions; confidence intervals; and hypothesis testing. These topics will be covered using a basic knowledge of algebra and Microsoft Excel.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Apply the concepts of statistics to a business situation.
  2. Analyze data using business software packages and interpret the results.
  3. Compute and interpret descriptive measures of a data set.
  4. Analyze the concepts of discrete probability distributions.
  5. Analyze the concepts of normal probability distributions.
  6. Using sampling distributions to construct and interpret confidence intervals.
  7. Use a sample to construct a confidence interval and a test hypothesis.
  8. Use a sample to test a hypothesis.
  9. Analyze the concepts of linear regression and correlation.
  10. Recognize and evaluate proper and improper uses of statistical data in business.
