Exchanging Information
A.Read the anecdote and comment on the last statement.
Response. “First-rate people hire first-rate people; second-rate people hire second-rate people.” I completely agree with this statement. A famous and prosperous company, of course, will hire a perfect specialist and will pay lots of money. A small and unknown firm will hire appropriate worker, even if he is a good one. The firm can pay him enough money. First-rate people prefer cooperating with first-rate people. Also it connects with prestige. And Second-rate people work with second-rate workers.
B.Read the following anecdote and 1) describe the way of testing the secretary's independence of mind and express your opinion about it; 2) describe other ways of testing employees revealed in the text and express your opinion about them; 3) retell the anecdote in Indirect Speech.
1) The way of testing the secretary's independence of mind is very interesting. He asks the secretary about one dog in the snow. A secretary replies that he doesn't see this dog. And then repeated it again. The director wanted to check the presence of independence of mind to become an executive. He was satisfied of the answer. I agree with his point of view. I liked this manner very much! 2) The other ways of testing employees revealed in the text I don't like. In this case it was a bit rude. But I agree that, on the other hand, Patterson fired people at the drop of a hat. He never wanted to hear that something could not be done. It's right.
C.Read the following anecdote and 1) give its summary;
1) Sam Cherr, one of the three founders of Young & Rubicam, the advertising agency, had a simple way of getting the best work out of the people he managed. All marketing plans had to be put into writing, and some of these detailed reports often ran to 200 pages. And once he made one employee rewrite it several times. An employee rewrote it and only after that knew that Sam Cherr didn't see it at all! 2) I like the strategy of Sam Cherr. It helps him to get the best from his employees. Also it train confidence, a very necessary and important quality.
Developing Interpretation Skills A.Render the text in English. Management functions are relative isolated directions of managers's activity, which help him to implement a managing impact. There are cyclically repeating processes of receiving and processing of an administrative information, decision-making and its finishing to the performer in a basis of its realization. There are different functions of management: goal-setting, organization, stimulation, planning, account, control, regulation. Goal-setting is a definition of the purposes of activity of object of management. The most important results formulated in rather general view, unlike the tasks being more concrete results, expressed often quantitatively, refer usually to the purposes. The purpose which never can't be reached but which it is possible to aspire to come nearer to, is called as an ideal. The organization is a placement of elements of object of management, a definition of their functions, communications (material and information) among themselves, and also with objects of environment. A stimulation is an encouragement and punishment of workers depending on results of their labor activity. Stimulation is carried out by various ways (methods) of management. Planning is a definition of future desirable condition of object of management and those actions (actions), which is necessary for carrying out to pass from a present condition to the desirable. It is carried out in two stages: the desirable condition of object expressed in quantitative values of the main indicators of its activity at first is defined, then the actions which performance will provide achievement of these indicators are developed. B.Translate into Russian
Writing Task. Write a short paragraph on one of the key points of the Unit. I was convinced that management is the serious work demanding such qualities as attentiveness, accuracy, responsibility, commitment. To work in the huge company, it is necessary to work much over itself. The management prefers clever and strong candidates. For this reason chiefs carry out difficult tests and ask tricky questions. Many heads use carrot and stick policy. It seems to them it is correct. Other chiefs always keep a tight rein their candidates. But more often everything depends on the employee: its salary, the relation of the administration and colleagues, slow or fast advance on a career ladder. There is such statement - all are in your hands, for this reason they can't be lowered.
