Exceptions:
We use singular forms with: ü nouns which end in -ics such as mathematics, physics, etc. e.g.Mathematics is my favourite subject. ü plural nouns when we talk about an amount of time, money, a time period, distance, weight, etc. e.g.Five years is a long time to do experiments. Note. The following expressions have no effect on the verb: e.g. The student, along with his friends, is going to the lecture. ü group nouns such as team, group, family, class, company and government, when we mean the group as a unit. But we use plural verbs when we mean the individuals that make up the group. e.g.My group studies mathematics. (as a unit) My group are going to the lecture. (the individual members of the group) We use plural forms with: ü the nouns people, clothes, police and stairs. e.g.The people are looking for the solution of this technical problem. ü nouns which refer to objects that consist of two parts, such as gloves, glasses, etc.
