Compound Nouns

A NUMBER OF / THE NUMBER OF

We don't use a / an or a number with these words. We use the phrase pair of ... instead.

e.g. I need a new pair of glasses.

a number of + plural noun + plural verb ...

e.g.A number of students are going to the lab.

the number of + plural noun + singular verb ...

e.g.The number of days in a week is seven.

Compound nouns are nouns that are made of two or more parts and are formed as follows:

a) adverb + noun

e.g. scholarly paper − наукова стаття

b) adjective + noun

e.g. incompatible hypotheses − незалежні гіпотези

c) noun + noun

e.g. accuracy analysis − аналіз точності

decision pattern − модель прийняття рішень

d) (noun + part. I) + noun

e.g. efficiency-decreasing − такий, що зменшує ефективність

e) (adjective + part. I) + noun

e.g. English-speaking − англомовний

long-standing − тривалий

f) (adjective + part. IІ) + noun

e.g. fine-grained

g) (number + part. IІ) + noun

e.g. four-sided − чотиристоронній

e.g. modern-looking− сучасний на вигляд

e.g. American National Standarts Institute rating − вимоги Американського національного інституту стандартів

data processing center − центр обробки даних

e.g. Doppler's effect − ефект Доплера
