Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It's a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and effort.

When children begin to learn English at school, they start with the ABC, transcription and sounds. Then they learn some English words, conversational phrases and dialogues by heart, read and translate easy texts. They also work in the language laboratory listening to recorded tapes and doing laboratory works.

From lesson to lesson students learn more and more words, grammatical structures and put them into practice of speaking. If they try to listen to different educational programs over the radio and watch films in English on TV, it helps them to make better progress.

English is not an easy language to learn. There is a big problem of spelling; this language is very idiomatic; and the forms of the verb are terrible. English is one of the languages which may seem easy in the beginning but then you find that it is not so. But if you make a good progress, it will make you happy. You will be able to speak to people from other countries, to read foreign authors in the original and it makes your outlook wider. It is not surprising that many intellectuals and well educated people know many foreign languages.

If you want to know foreign languages it means that you are interested in foreign countries, their culture s and people. As to English, it not only the language of such great countries as the USA and Great Britain, but also the international language, the language of progressive science and engineering. To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every true professional.
