Topic: The Great Gatsby

Question: What leads to Gatsby's downfall?

two major causes, to doom one's dream, the division of society (social stratification / societal differences), one's idealism

1. East Eggers (the old money people), to be born into wealth, to inherit one's wealth, not to work for one's money, to belong to the socialites // West Eggers (the newly rich or the new money people), to work for one's living, not to have the refinement and taste of the truly rich //a class gulf, to separate somebody / find oneself unable to break into East Egg society, to be held at arm's length

2. to live in the past, to recapture the past, one's own invention, change one's name from …to, to fake status, to buy British shirts, to claim to have attended Oxford, to justify one's position in society ( to win social acceptance) / to devote one's life to somebody (to dedicate oneself to winning somebody back), to be a fake, to be beautiful and charming, to be fickle and shallow, to be unworthy of one's admiration
