Has several pieces that must be connected. Is used while carrying out a process. E.g.: breathing apparatus, apparatus for the experiment 3. appliance - a machine or piece of equipment (esp. an electrical one) used in the house, for example, a washing machine or refrigerator. E.g.: household/domestic/electrical appliances 4. device - a machine, tool or piece of equipment designed or adapted for a particular purpose. Often does not work autonomously, but works jointly with a machine. E.g.: labour-saving device, nuclear device 5. engine - a machine with moving parts that uses fuel to produce energy, to convert power into motion, for example, in a road vehicle or aircraft E.g.: a jet/diesel/steam engine 6. equipment (u) – a set of tools, devices, etc. assembled for a specific purpose E.g.: safety equipment, a piece of equipment 7. gadget - a small tool or piece of equipment, especially one that is ingenious or novel, that does sth useful or impressive. Can be used for things that may not really be necessary but we still like them. 8. machine - a piece of equipment that does a particular job by using electricity, steam, gas etc. Has moving parts and often performs tasks automatically, or assists in performing tasks, reducing our efforts. E.g.: cash/vending/washing/answering machine 9. gizmo - a gadget, mechanical device or tool, especially one whose name the speaker cannot recall. E.g.: high-tech gizmo 10. durable - difficult to break / damage = long-lasting, hard-wearing 11. easy to use =simple to operate, user-friendly 12. environmentally friendly =eco-friendly, green, non-polluting 13. handy =useful, practical 14. obsolete - no longer used / needed because sth better has been invented 15. cutting-edge =up-to-date, high-tech, groundbreaking, state-of-the-art, advanced 16. patent/ˈpeɪt(ə)nt/- an official document that gives someone who has invented sth the legal right to make or sell that invention for a particular period of time, and prevents anyone else from doing so E.g.: In 1878, Edison received a patent for his phonograph.
