17. to credit sb with sth - to say or believe that someone is responsible for a particular achievement

E.g.: Alexander Bell was credited with the invention of the telephone.

18. to acknowledge achievements/əkˈnɒlɪdʒ/ - accepting that something has achieved by somebody

syn.: to recognize achievements

19. to pass a resolution - an official decision that is made after a group or organization have voted

E.g.: The United Nations passed (= voted to support) a resolution to increase aid to the Third World.

20. to exploit- to use a situation so that you get benefit from it, even if it is wrong or unfair to do this

E.g.: We need to exploit every opportunity for media coverage.

 

Travel nouns:

1. travel (uncount.) - the general term to describe going from one place to another

travels - time spent travelling, especially in foreign countries and for pleasure

*The novel is based on his travels in India.

2. journey - one single piece of travel: the distance covered when travelling from one place to another. Journey can refer to a long distance or to a short regular one.

*How long did your journey take? *How long is your journey to work? Just about 20 minutes.

*a long and difficult journey across the mountains

3. trip - going to another place (often for a short period of time) and usually back again, for a purpose, business or pleasure. Usually involves more than one single journey.

*day trip, round trip, business trip, a five-minute trip by taxi

Trip or journey?
  • a trip usually involves you going to a place and back again; a journey is usually one-way
  • a trip is often shorter than a journey, although it does not have to be:
*a trip to New York *a round-the-world trip
  • it is often short in time, even if it is long in distance
  • journey is more often used when the travelling takes a long time and is difficult
  • in AmE journey is not used for short trips:
*(BrE) What is your journey to work like?

 

4. tour /tʊə/ (of/round/around sth) - a journey made for pleasure during which several different places/ towns/countries, etc. are visited

package tour - a holiday that is organised by a company at a fixed price and that includes the cost of travel, hotels, etc.

5. voyage /ˈvɔɪɪdʒ/- a long journey, not necessarily for pleasure, by sea or in space

*The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage (=first journey).

6. cruise /kruːz/ - a journey by sea, visiting different places, especially as a holiday/vacation

*I'd love to go on a round-the-world cruise. *a luxury cruise ship

7. outing - a short trip made for pleasure or education, usually with a group of people and lasting no more than a day

*The children were on a day's outing from school.

8. hike - a long walk in the country

9. camping - living in a tent on holiday/vacation

*Do you go camping?

10.expedition - an organised journey with a particular purpose, especially to find out about a place that is not well known

*to plan/lead/go on an expedition to the North Pole

 

11.be on / go on a trip/ journey / tour/cruise

12.make a trip / journey / tour

13.take a trip

 

14.accommodation (uncount.) - a place to live, work or stay in

*Hotel accommodation is included in the price of your holiday.

15.to argue - to give reasons why you think that sth is right/wrong, true/not true, etc, especially to persuade people that you are right

*He was too tired to argue the point (=discuss the matter).

*He argued that they needed more time to finish the project.

16.benefit - an advantage that sth gives you

17.be aware of sth /əˈweə/ - know or realise sth

18.be enthusiastic about sth /ɪnˌθjuːziˈæstɪk/

*You don't sound very enthusiastic about the idea.

19.be pleased with sth / to do sth

= broaden someoneÕs horizons /həˈraɪzn/

21.challenging - difficult in an interesting way that tests your ability

22.convenience /kənˈviːniəns/ - the quality of being useful, easy or suitable for sb

inconvenience /ˌɪnkənˈviːniəns/ - trouble or problems

*We apologize for the delay and regret any inconvenience it may have caused.

23.common /ˈkɒmən/ - happening often; existing in large numbers or in many places

24.custom /ˈkʌstəm/ (of doing sth) - an accepted way of behaving / of doing things in a society

25.destination - a place to which sb is going or sth is being sent

26.distant - far away in space or time

27.documentary /ˌdɒkjuˈmentri/- a film or tv programme giving facts about sth

28.domestic - inside a particular country; not foreign or international

*domestic flights (=to and from places within a country)

29.explore sth - to travel to/around an area/country in order to learn about it

30.to experience sth (different cultures)

31.fascinating /ˈfæsɪneɪtɪŋ/ - extremely interesting and attractive

32.find oneself somewhere - to discover yourself doing sth or in a particular situation, especially when this is unexpected

*I suddenly found myself running down the street.

33.globetrotter Ð a person who travels regularly / frequently to different places around the world

to globetrot Ð to travel often and widely, especially for sightseeing

34.holidaymaker - a person who is visiting a place on holiday/vacation

39.get on / along with sb - to have a friendly relationship with sb

*We get along just fine together.

42.off the beaten track Ð 1) far away from other people, houses, etc; 2) unusual

46.tourist trap - a place that attracts a lot of tourists and where food, drink, entertainment, etc. is more expensive than normal
