Unit 12 Crime 1. alleged suspects / threats /əˈledʒd/ - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved E.g.: The alleged victim's evidence could not be relied upon. 2. attorney- Am.E. lawyer 3. autopsy/ˈɔːtɒpsi/ - a medical examination of a dead person's body to find out why they died 4. captor- someone who is keeping you as a prisoner 5. to dig (dug, dug) a tunnel 6. to disable the alarm system - to stop the alarm system from working properly 7. to get away with sth - to manage to do sth bad without being punished or criticized for it E.g.: They have repeatedly broken the law and got away with it. 8. to make a getaway- to escape after committing a crime E.g.: The men made their getaway in a car parked outside the bank. 9. to take fingerprints 10. hostage- a person who is the prisoner of someone who threatens to kill them if they do not get what they want E.g.: The President is making every effort to obtain the release of the hostages. 11. lawyer 12. to negotiate an exchange - to try to reach an agreement by discussing something in a formal way, especially in a business or political situation 13. premises/ˈpremɪsɪz/ - the buildings and land that a business or organization uses E.g.: The charity is hoping to move to new premises next year. 14. prosecutor/ˈprɒsɪkjuːtə(r)/ - a lawyer whose job is to prove in court that someone accused of a crime is guilty 15. to be questioned by the police - if the police question someone, they ask them questions to find out what they know about a crime E.g.: A man is being questioned by detectives in connection with the murder of a young girl. 16. ransom- the amount of money that someone wants to be paid before they will let a person who they are keeping prisoner go free E.g.: Her kidnappers are demanding a £5 million ransom.
